What are meta tags?
A meta-tag is a special HTML keyword which provides data about your web page to the search engine robots. There are lots of different tags which declare information such as the keywords, description and category of your site.
Different types of meta tags
There are two different types of meta tags that can be used: System variables and user variables. The system variables are also known as "HTTP-EQUIV" tags. They often provide only information to the browser, such as the page reload time and language. The user variables are again designed to the search engines. They can provide information about the page, such as the author, description and keywords.
How to use meta tags?
Using meta tags is very easy. The meta tags are placed between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags, usually after the <TITLE> tag. Here are two examples for both types:
<META name="description" content="A description of your page">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" content="EN">
Do meta tags boost search engine rankings?
Yes, they do help. But no, you cannot achieve high rankings with only meta tags. It is usually recommended that you atleast use the description and keywords tags, since these two tags are the most important of them all.
Also be sure the text used for your Meta Keywords, and Meta Description is actually used on the body of your page. This is very important, if your tags are unrelated the search engines can view this as attempting to rank for words or phrases you page isn't actually about.
