Static content which does not change frequently. May also refer to content that does not have any social elements to it and does not use dynamic programming languages.

Many static sites do well, but the reasons fresh content works great for SEO are:

* If you keep building content every day you eventually build a huge archive of content
* By frequently updating your content you keep building mindshare, brand equity, and give people fresh content worth linking at

Dynamic content which changes over time or uses a dynamic language such as PHP to help render the page.

In the past search engines were less aggressive at indexing dynamic content than they currently are. While they have greatly improved their ability to index dynamic content it is still preferable to use URL rewriting to help make dynamic content look static in nature.

Default RE: static and dynamic site?

Static Pages
Quick and easy to put together, even by someone who doesn't have much experience.
Ideal for demonstrating how a site will look.
Cache friendly, one copy can be shown to many people.

Dynamic Pages
Offers highly personalized and customised visitor options.
Database access improves the personalized experience (as opposed to using just client side cookies)
Scripts can read in data sources and display it differently depending on how it is run.
Can create the illusion of being updated regularly using time and date sensitive routines (or even randomisers) to display pre-written text.

Here is the difference between dynamic and static pages/URLs:

1) A dynamic URL is a page address that results from the search of a database-driven web site or the URL of a web site that runs a script. Dynamic URLs are generated from specific queries to a site's database. The dynamic page is basically only a template in which to display the results of the database query. Instead of changing information in the HTML code, the data is changed in the database.

2) A static URL on the other hand, is a URL that doesn't change, and doesn't have variable strings. Static URLs are typically ranked better in search engine results pages, and they are indexed more quickly than dynamic URLs, if dynamic URLs get indexed at all. Static URLs are also easier for the end-user to view and understand what the page is about. If a user sees a URL in a search engine query that matches the title and description, they are more likely to click on that URL than one that doesn't make sense to them.
