KEI is essentially a way to determine which keywords to target - ideally you want to target the ones with the most benefit (or gain) that require the least amount of work to achieve. Let's try a simple exercise, okay? Create a table. On the X axis (or bottom), put the search volume, and on the Y axis (or left side) put either the Google PageRank of the first search result (if you only care about Google) or the total results returned. You'll want to choose the keywords that are on the right side of the table but toward the bottom. These are the keywords that have the most searches yet the lowest PageRank (or total results returned). In other words, the most benefit for the least amount of work.
