ust built a website and am building the seo. Working my way into directories right now and stuff. But I was wondering if external linking to my competitors web site when that website is not linking to me HELP my site or HURT it? I understand the fact of it helping the competitor site cause your giving him the link, but my site is better and I'm not afraid to source his site as another source to help my site.. WHAT DO I DO? NO SPAMMING. SEO SPAM IS SO ANNOYING! THANK YOU.

It won't hurt your site at all. What it will do however is help the competition's sites. However, if they find your site useful, they may link back to you in return. (Yes, it's a reciprocal link, but it'd be a natural one, which the search engines - including Google - are fine with. When people talk about reciprocal links, they're talking about the artificially created ones with the intent to manipulate the search results.)

It will not hurt but indeed it will help you to get more traffic.

As far as I know it will neither hurt your site nor help it. I haven't see any site which has gained SEO advantage by linking to competition sites. If anybody thinks it will help, please explain a bit, thanks.
