Article could trigger duplicate content penalty of your own website. Better avoid this activity if you plan to score higher search engine rankings

Articles COULD trigger duplicate content, but if you do it correctly it will not. For example, you should spin every article you create. Here is a good idea to write submit articles:
1.)Spin your article and have 5 different versions.
2.)Submit to 25 article directories per day with Article Version 1
3.)Every 3 days submit your new version/spin of the article to 25 directories. (Yes, it can be the same directory.) This allows traffic, content, and links that google sees going up. The key is you are spinning the articles and you are doing it in stages. Never submit all at once...you will spam your own site.
4.)Repeat the process every 3 days until you have ALL your articles submitted to ALL sites. (This could take some time, have fun!!!)
