Yes it can be counted as backlinks but it would be useful if you would use anchor text on your link sig.

Yes they would count as backlinks. However this forum seems to be utilizing the nofollow attribute, so even though it has a live link, the value will not be counted.

A wise SEOer will always put anchored links in his/her forum signature. Remember that the words used as the link text should be what you want people to find your website with. Mine is a debt manegement blog, so my sig should include those keywords like "how to clear debts" etc.

Actually, a wise SEO will know that forum signature links are practically worthless from an SEO perspective.

I agree with what you said Dan. It's true that if you just rely only on forum signatures your ranking won't skyrocket. However, as a SEO, even if it is not as helpful as others it still can help. It can be also a form of advertising. Especially if you are a popular person in forums like yourself, Dan, many curious people will click your link.

*remember that Google already said that nofollow links are no help in PR sculpting. It can help, however, in traffic.

While it's true that it can be used as a form of advertising, marketing and promotion, the topic of this thread deals with optimization, which is another beast entirely.
