Default Site Down and Deleted

Sorry everyone, the site was down for a bit and if you were online when it occurred you would of seen Tareeinternet.com just had an empty "Index Of /" with no files.

So yes somehow the whole site was completely deleted off the server, when i noticed it i restored the latest nightly tarball backup and we were back online in a matter of 5 minutes and i believe we lost no data what so ever.

It appears the site was hacked from a quick scan of the server logs, i won't post the lot but this is Mr Haxor:

I must admit, he was pretty good he elevated privileges enough to switch out my forum admin accounts email address with his and delete the sites files. However my only advice to him is you need to get faster at it, the amount of hours it took you to hack the site compared with the 5 minutes it took me to click a few buttons and restore it makes the whole thing a complete waste of time.

But i guess if you have nothing to do all day besides try and exploit sites, more power to you.

Sure it is, if you take daily snapshots of your databases and file system and store it offsite (somewhere other than the server your site is hosted on) it's pretty simple to restore things in case of a failure.

If your site is large or bandwidth is a concern, you can perform a "diff backup" where only the changes since the previous backup are copied across. You can encrypt and password protect your backups, so if someone does get hold of your backup .tar they can't extract it or replicate your site.

There's free tools that will do all this automatically like Rsync.

Now days there's no reason to lose any significant amounts of data if your site gets hacked or wiped out.

(I'm looking at you WebHostingTalk.com lol)
